Text Box: Graduation Project

Dear Athens Students, Parents, and other Interested People,

I hope you are full of enthusiasm and ideas because… You are embarking on a Grand Adventure!

The Graduation Project is required by the State of North Carolina for graduation.  It affects all students in the Class of 2010 and following.  Part of the NC Exit Standards, it is a synthesis of all the skills and abilities you will need to succeed in your future.  The Graduation Project Overview and the Power Point Graduation Project at Athens Drive are good places to start thinking about your journey.

One great thing about the Graduation Project is that students will have the opportunity to practice individual responsibility.  In fact, because the GP is not tied to any particular course or grade, students really must exercise a high degree of self-direction if they plan to finish successfully.

However, you are not alone!  Freshmen and Sophomores will be guided by their JAGS teachers, who are far more than just the old “homeroom” teachers.  All information sheets, forms, contracts, and milestones will come through JAGS.  After choosing a topic, students will have a GP Advisor for the last two years.  Their 11th-grade English teacher will help them with the Paper, and a Community Mentor will help them with the Product.

In addition, you can find a link to all materials needed to meet each milestone and a link to Blackboard, where you can find Announcements and an ongoing Discussion Board.  Timely announcements will also be given on ATV and the PTSA Listserv.  If you can’t find what you need, contact me by phone, e-mail, or during office hours.

Get Excited!  You are going to enjoy doing your GP, because you can focus on your own interests, talents, and skills.  The Athens Drive Faculty and Staff look forward to supporting you.  We can’t wait to see what you’ll discover…about your topic, about a career field, about community resources, and most of all, about YOURSELF!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Sara Overby. M. Ed.
