Education Funding Update – David Rockefeller

  • David Rockefeller is the CTE Director for Wake County Public Schools. He joined us to discuss funding sources for CTE programs and the challenges facing this funding.
  • There are three sources of funding for CTE programs – Federal, State and Local. State dollars make up the largest piece of the pie.
  • The Federal funding source is the Perkins Bill (3), which ended over a year ago, has not yet been reinstituted, but funding has continued. Federal Perkins Bill (4) is now under consideration. The Executive Branch would like to see a revised bill were local programs will have to apply for a piece of a large “bucket”, that may or may not be spent directly to fund CTE.
  • “What can we do?”
    • Federal – Contact senators and thank them for their CTE support as they have passed the bill for Perkins to continue, “As is”. Contact Congress reps and ask them for their support.
    • State – Contact Legislators and ask for their continued state funding.
    • Local – Talk to your school board members and reinforce the importance of CTE funding.
  • Mike suggested partnering businesses with CTE academies (i.e., WakeMed and Eastern Wake Medical Academy).
  • Kathy suggested that business leaders let their government leaders know what they have gained in employees from CTE programs and what they continue to need from CTE programs.
  • As a result of the above discussion, Amy will talk to state legislators to find out how the Alliance could provide the most impact to support funding, while Kelly will draft a letter to send to various leaders with our support for funding attached to a CTE success story.
