Welcome and Review of Prior Meeting Minutes - Don Shupe

  • Minutes from November's meeting approved. Effective this month, meeting minutes will be distributed within one week of our meeting. This change will more effectively catch any modifications that are needed to the minutes while the meeting is new on everyone's mind.

Update on Current Issues Impacting AHDS - Kathy Chontos

  • The 2005-2008 School Improvement Plan will be presented to faculty in January and voted on for approval on January 10th.
  • One key point of the Wake County plan is to have 95% of all students in all subgroups at or above grade level by 2008. Athens Drive High School is hoping to use this as an objective and their goal to be "Students will realize their full potential by following a rigorous and diverse curriculum, based on state and federal standards, in a safe and supportive environment."
  • Other aspects of the SIP are the Mission, Values and Vision.

CDC Report - Jane Dodge

  • Joy Frankoff spoke at the CTC luncheon. This program rewards students with "can-do" attitudes and creative initiative.
  • Mr. Kromer's class went to Boney Architecture who primarily design and build schools. Each architect explained their own unique role in the company.
  • Beginning in January, there will be Career Speakers in the Media Center on a bi-weekly basis. Lesley will be the first speaker and will discuss Biomedical Engineering. Jane will be sending out dates in order for other Alliance members to sign up. Time frame will be approximately 10:45-11:15am.

Reintroduction of "Action Register" - Wayne Tindle

  • Wayne discussed the importance of the Action Register and the Decision Register and how they are tools that help us to better conduct meetings. The Action Register will be completed for the next Business Alliance Meeting.
  • The Decision Register will be a tool to help the Alliance track when and why decisions were made during meetings and will be created and updated for the next meeting.

Video conferencing and collaborative efforts -Doug Foster

  • "Career to School" video conferencing - The block scheduling has made it difficult for students to go on field trips, this idea would bring the speaker via video conferencing to the students. Doug will work with Kathy to discuss the idea with WCPSS IT and hopefully get their support.
  • "Make it Real" Design and Build Competition - Students often do not connect classroom exercises with a real world application. This project would allow students to design and build a Business Alliance display. Kelly is working with Rich Kromer to work out timelines, sponsorship details, scope of project and rules.

Alliance Notes Outline - Kelly Constantinetis

  • Kelly reviewed the outline of the Winter Issue of the Alliance notes. Articles will include New Member Profile, Creative Arts Career Fair, CTC luncheon, Overview and Business Alliance and Solicitation of Speakers, Alliance Member Profile, Teacher Alliance Partnership, Upcoming Events.
