May 24, 2013 ADHS Golf Benefit
Calling all golfers and auction lovers! The place to be on June 11 will be Lochmere Golf Course for the annual Jag Club Golf Tournament, Dinner and Auction. Please visit the tournament website for all you need to register. Don't golf? Not a problem. Purchase a $10 meal ticket for a wonderful selection of foods from Ruckus in Tryon Village. Peruse the silent auction and get ready to come home with some fabulous wins. All proceeds go to the Jag Club, partner of Athens Drive Athletic Department. Working together, we provide team support from facility upgrades and maintenance to transportation of athletes to equipment needs. And all the little stuff in between.

May 21, 2013 ADHS Receives STEM Grant
The ADHS Environmental Club received the Professional Land Care Network (PLANET) "Day of Service Grant" sponsored by Hicks Landscaping in Wendell NC. The grant was obtained with the support of students and staff of ADHS via voting for best plan and T-shirt desing online. The club will receive a $2500 for landscape design to provide a educational nature area for students and to promote environmental awareness on campus.
May 20, 2013 ADHS Orchestra Performance
The final orchestra performance of the year is this Tuesday, May 21, at 7 PM in the auditorium. This is known as our senior concert. The seniors will be given special recognition as a wide variety of music is played, both classical and popular. Performances are free and open to the public. There will be a reception following the performance.

May 10, 2013, Yearbook Distribution
The 2013 Yearbook will be distributed during 2nd period, on Wednesday, May 15, at the ATV bell for those who pre-ordered. Additional books will go on sale Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 7:15am in room 1920. Books will also be sold during lunch in room 1920. Cost is $90, CASH ONLY (no checks and no charge). 2, 2013, ADHS Student Participates in Pieces of Gold
Below is a link to the performance of ADHS 11th grader, Austin Hamilton, at the WCPSS Pieces of Gold show at Memorial Auditorium in March. Since this popular set, Austin is being asked to perform in various other local venues. Kudos to Austin and to his teachers.

April 26, 2013 FCCLA State Winners
Please congratulate Jasmine Leon-Torres who won a silver medal in Fashion Construction at the FCCLA State Competition. Jasmine has now been invited to compete at the National Competition in Nashville, TN this summer. Please also congratulate Christina Luong, Sophia and Andrea Sequiera who competed and also won silver medals for their entries.
April 23, 2013 STEM Academy Lunch Guest Speaker
The STEM Academy of Energy and Sustainability is sponsoring a lunch and learn series in April and May. Students can come during lunch to hear speakers from the area who are in STEM fields. This is a requirements for the STEM students, but we are offering the sessions to any student who would like to come and hear and learn about careers in STEM. This month, we will have engineers from Caterpillar who will com talk about their roles at this global company. We will host a Manufacturing Engineer on April 25 (this Thursday) and a Product Engineer on April 30! The flyer with all the details are attached. April 22, 2013 ADHS Wind Ensemble selected to perform in Carnegie Hall in March, 2014!!
The Athens Drive H.S. Wind Ensemble has been selected to perform in Carnegie Hall on March 24, 2014 for the "National Band & Orchestra Festival." The band was chosen based on their past superior performance records, honorary appearances at the N.C. Music Educators Conference and "Music for All" National Concert Band Festival, and upon recommendations by well-respected music educators. This 60 member concert ensemble, comprising the most advanced instrumental music students at Athens Drive, will perform a 30 minute concert for a panel of internationally known wind band conductors and composers.

April 17, 2013 Environmental Club Grant
The Environmental Club is competing for a grant for environmental awareness and school improvement. Our students designed an Earth Day t-shirt and submitted a plan that would provide picnic tables and landscaping for the outside area by the auditorium and senior parking lot. In addition to beautification, it will also help alleviate congested areas during lunch by providing seating space for the students. We are in second place currently by only 70 votes and WE NEED YOUR VOTE TO WIN. Please take a minute to go to the following link and vote for Athens Drive's t-shirt design.

April 12, 2013 Percussion to Perform in Dayton, Ohio
Our Winter Percussion Ensemble will be performing for the second consecutive year in an International Competition in Dayton, Ohio next Thursday, April 18th. These students will be competing with some of the finest percussionists in the world. Last year, our students finished in 15th place! (Not to shabby as the world is a big place!)
April 10, 2013 ADHS Blood Drive
The ADHS Health Science Career Academy will sponsor its Blood Drive in conjunction with Rex Blood Services on Tuesday, April 16 from 9 a.m. and the last appointment will begin at 1:00 p.m. Academy students will facilitate signing up for the drive and helping to move students back and forth for donation times. They will begin registering eligible 17-year old students and adults today (Wednesday) at lunch. Please help by donating (if possible) and facilitating student donations. Look for ATV announcements and posters.
April 9, 2013 ADHS Participate in FOX 50's Lip Dub Competition
Athens Drive High students have entered FOX 50's Lip Dub competition. Students lip sync to a song and have to do it all in one shot! No editing allowed! Schools are allowed to submit one video per school. The winning school gets $10,000! The winners are determined by who gets the most votes. That's where you come in. Voting starts Monday April 8th through 11:59 PM on Friday April 12th. Voting is FREE and easy. Either go to http://www.fox50.com/community/lip-dub or to FOX 50's Facebook page. March 28, Spring 2013 ASVAB
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test will be given on Wednesday, April 24th in the Athens Drive Auditorium Periods 1, 2 and A Lunch.
The ASVAB is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success. It is administered annually to more than one million military applicants, high school, and post-secondary students in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade.

March 21, 2013 ADHS Receives Awards
Athens Drive HS was well represented at the Board of Education meeting last night! Senior Paul Tanner was Athens Spotlight Student for 2012-13. Also our very own Dr Miller received the Employee Excellence award after being nominated by the Security Department. Way to represent ADHS gentlemen!!
March 20, 2013 ADHS Students Attend French Festival
Our French students were wonderful participants at the French Festival on Wednesday, March 20th. We're proud of their effort and competitive spirit. Together, they won 3 third places and 4 first places in traditional song, spelling bee, theater performance, and original skit. Please, congratulate them.
March 19, 2013 Health and Nutrition Workshop for Students Workshop
The ADHS PTSA is bringing another workshop to Athens Drive High School on 25 March - this workshop is all about Health and Nutrition for students, and specifically guides parents on strategies to use to encourage their children to eat the right foods, and teaches that smart snacks can enhance studying! The workshop, which is being presented by Brian Glendenning Senior Administrator at WCPSS Healthful Living on Monday March 25 is in room 2914 at ADHS, commencing at 6.30 until 7.30. Please arrive at 6.15pm to sign in. This workshop is available to all parents, and adults involved with school age children. We hope to see you there. March 6, AHDS State DECA: An Association of Marketing Students Winners
DECA students competed among 2,600 Marketing students from across NC in Greensboro on March 3-5, 2013 and worked extremely hard in preparing for this event. Athens Drive High School Marketing Program was awarded the state's Chapter of Distinction Award for the largest percentage of new DECA members! The students ALL reached proficiency in their various Marketing Events. Event winners were:
- Monica Brookie-TEST WINNER in the Quick Serve Restaurant Mgmt. Event
- Paul Tanner-TEST WINNER in the Principles of Marketing Event
- Poojan Mehta-ROLEPLAY Presentation WINNER in the Hotel and Lodging Marketing Mgmt. Event
Finally, a special congratulations is extended to PAUL TANNER who was the 2nd Place State Winner in the Principles of Marketing Event!!! He will now move on to represent NC at the International DECA Competition in Anaheim, CA (April)! Congratulations to these students on a job well-done!

February 26, ADHS Participates in WRAL Brain Game
The Athens Drive Brain Game Team competed last Saturday at the WRAL studios in their quarterfinal matchup versus Jordan-Matthews High School and Wayne Country Day High School. We had a respectable showing, finishing with 360 points. Unfortunately, the Jordan-Matthews team had lightning-fast reflexes and they won the game with a score of 510. The team's members were John Nance, Jenny Nance, John Darges, and Vraj Patel.
The episode will air on WRAL at 11am on Saturday, March 16th if you'd like to watch.

January 30, NAEP Exam Rescheduled
The NAEP exam has been rescheduled for Monday, February 4, 2013. Students will be dismissed at 8:25 a.m to report to the auditorium for testing. All students should be done with the NAEP exam by 10 a.m.

A painting by ADHS student Anh Thu Hoang has been accepted into this year's NC General Assembly Youth Art Exhibition! Her work will be exhibited in the Legislative Building for this special year-long exhibit.

The 5th Annual Glass Slipper Ball will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013.
Celebrating positive character traits amongst 9-12
grade Athens
Drive women, the ball is held in a Sadie Hawkins
style format with girls asking guys to the dance.
Tickets go on sale during the week of January 28.

23, All State Choral Students
Congratulations to eight of our choral students who earned a seat at the All State Chorus this weekend. The students are Rayane Amrani, Nicole Black, Samantha Childers, Sarah Gothard, Armory Lawson, Briana McManus, Abby Schull, and Breanna Wilson
Rehearsals begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan 25 and the event concludes with a formal concert Saturday, January 26 @ 3:00. The event will be held at the Coliseum in Greensboro, NC. Admission is free and open to the public. Thank you for supporting the Choral Arts!

13, Yearbook Award
The 2012 yearbook, led by Elizabeth Luna and two students, Devan Brush and Doha Hindi, won a 1st place award from the American Scholastic Press Association. This award was based on the outstanding page layout and design of the yearbook.

13, Newly Established ADHS DECA Chapter Receives
Awards at the Marketing Competitive Events Conference
Athens Drive DECA was recognized as a "Star" Chapter for the number of new members recruited and participation in competitive events
12 out of our 14 student representatives were recognized as Proficiency Winners in their various events and have now qualified to represent Athens at the state DECA competition in March 2013 (quite a feat for first year members!!)

December 12, Dr. Markoch Receives Award
Dr. Jerry Markoch, our band director extraordinaire, has been presented a very prestigious award. In its December issue, School and Band Orchestra Magazine named Dr. Markoch the top band leader for North Carolina! The link below contains a wonderful article about Dr. Markoch and the award.

December 5, Aussie Basketball Travellers to visit ADHS
The Athletic Department is excited to announce the arrival of the Aussie Basketball Travellers (ABT) to Raleigh, NC. This year, ABT will be bringing both a men's and women's varsity basketball team to Athens Drive High all the way from Australia. Various basketball and Jag Club families will be hosting these players and coaches from Sunday, Dec. 9 through Tuesday, Dec. 11.
On Monday, Dec. 10, these players will be attending class with Athens basketball players and National Honor Society students for both first and second period.
That evening, games between the Aussies and Athens will commence. Please make plans to attend! The women's varsity game will be at 6:30PM followed by the men's varsity at 8PM. Thank you for your support.

December 3, Student Group Receives Grant Funding
We are pleased to announce that the Athens Drive High School FIRST Robotics Team, the Hitchhikers, has been awarded a grant funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Through NASA’s Robotics Alliance Project, ADHS’ Hitchhikers have received $5000.00 in funding to pay for registration at the North Carolina Regional Event and a large piece of the team's budget, which also includes expenses to build a robot and other competition costs associated with the 2013 FIRST Robotics Competition. The Hitchhikers are very thankful for this opportunity and plan to make the most of the 2013 season. The world-wide kickoff for the 2013 competition will be held at Dorton Arena on January 5. November 15, US Army All-Amerian Marching Band Ceremony
The Athens Drive High School community and public are invited to attend a ceremony where the US ARMY ALL-AMERICAN MARCHING BAND will announce that tenor saxophone player, Brian Holtshouser, has earned Elite Status as a Member of the 2013 Band.
The ceremony will be held in the Athens Auditorium on Nov. 19 from 2-2:18PM.
Brian is the 7th Athens Drive High School Band member to be selected for this prestigious honor in 5 years. Only 125 high school senior marching musicians and color guard members are selected each year from across the country.

November 1, Sarah Bae Captures Singles Golf Title
Congratulations goes to Sarah Bae for capturing the 4A State Singles Championship held at Pinehurst this past Mon. & Tues. Sarah overcame less than desirable conditions to post scores of 78 - 74 to put herself in a tie with Ashley Osiecki of New Bern. After tying each other with a par on the first playoff hole, Sarah rolled in a 20 ft. putt for a birdie to capture the title. Sarah finishes the year as Tri-9 player of the year, all-conference, all-regional, all-state, and 4A State Singles Champion! Way to go Sarah - Athens Drive is proud to call you one of our own!
October 30, Theatre Department Announcements
Also this Sat. Nov. 3 from 8-3 in a section of the junior parking lot the theatre department will hold a yard/craft sale. Some of the proceeds benefit out theatre department. We understand that the SAT's are going on this day and we will NOT interfere with the testing. If you are involved in testing feel free to stop by after the test and check things out. We will have baked goods, drinks, crafts and more.
If you are still interested in buying a space to sell stuff let me know ASAP. Spaces are 20.00, and you keep your profit. If you are unable to participate this time we will hold another on in the spring.
Our fall play Twelve Angry Jurors will open Nov. 29 and run through Dec. 1. Posters will be delivered soon. Please post them and help support our program.

Attn: Parents - Student Services is hosting an evening with an admissions representative from ECU called, "How to navigate the admissions process." This is open to all parents and is particularly geared towards junior and senior parents. It will be held on November 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

Custodial Appreciation Week - September 9-15 |
Wake County Public School System will observe the week of September 9-15, 2012 as Custodial Appreciation week. The date is in conjunction with International Executive HouseKeepers Association Week which is celebrated internationally. WCPSS would like to take just a few moments to thank the 400 plus custodians for all of their hard work and dedication to providing a clean and safe environment to all of our occupants seven days a week. The Custodian is the caretaker and caregiver to all of our building sites. They are the 1st to arrive at school in the mornings and the last to leave at night offering a daily dose of TLC (tender loving care) to the building and its occupants.
And very special thanks to our wonderful custodians: Todd Rushton, Pat Humphrey, Mr Do, Ann Roberson. Thanks for taking such good care of us and our school!

KICK IT TO CANCER PINK-OUT GAME
Athens Drive Men's JV and Varsity Soccer Teams will be hosting their second annual breast cancer fundraiser Friday, September 14th. The JV game will start at 5:30pm followed by the Varsity game at 7:30pm. Athens will be hosting Wake Forest/Rolesville High. The event will be held at Athens Drive Stadium and will include a raffle, concessions, and performances by the Athens Band and Dance Team. Please come out and show your support for Athens Drive and breast cancer research!

MEN'S JV AND VARSITY
SOCCER
Tryouts will be
held July 30th-August 2nd from 6-8 PM on the practice
field next to the senior parking lot. All players
will run a timed 2 mile during the tryout period,
and to be considered for the varsity team your
2 mile time must be under 14 minutes. There is
no time requirement for the JV team. Items that
you need to bring with you to tryouts include:
*Current Physical Form
*All soccer appropriate gear (bring indoor and outdoor gear)
*Water Bottle Eligibility Requirements:
*All incoming freshman are eligible to participate in fall sports
*Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors must have passed at least 3 out of 4 courses
and attended
school (85 percent of the previous semester's days)

Our Scholarship total for the class of 2012 is $4,829,156. This is very competitive in the county! We had one NCSU Park Scholar - Allison Menius and two National Merit Finalists - Jessica Castro-Rappl and Matthew Fay. Our Valedictorian, Xiaoxiang Yang has received a substantial scholarship to Washington and Lee where he plans to attend, and our Salutatorian, Emma Thorpe, has received scholarship money to attend NCSU! We had 65 Presidential Scholars, 77 North Carolina Scholars, and 85 National Honor Society Scholars.Many of our students were offered full and partial tuition scholarships at our state and private institutions, and Sarah Anderson was our school winner of the People Helping People Scholarship sponsored by the State Employees' Credit Union. We had Congratulations to the class of 2012 for all your accomplishments.

Summer Volleyball Workouts will begin June 25 and will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8 - 10 AM. There will be no workouts the week of July 2 - July 6.

All seniors and their families are invited to attend the 2012 Interfaith Baccalaureate service on Wednesday evening, June 6, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the Athens Drive Auditorium. A reception will follow at the conclusion of the service.
A flyer was recently mailed to each senior's home address. Please return your reservation form or contact Susan Cowles with the name of your senior and number in your party.
For the third year this will be an interfaith service featuring readings by students, music by our chorus and guest speakers from our local faith communities including the Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim faiths.
Students of all faiths are invited to attend as well as participate. If your faith tradition is not represented above, please let us know. We want this to be inclusive for everyone. To volunteer to participate, please contact Susan Cowles at SCowles@AESLending.com or 919/924-1316.
