paw August 22, 2010 Final Preparation Information - Mr. Parrish, Assistant Principal for Instruction
WELCOME BACK TO A NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

Athens Parents and Students:

We had a great year last year, and we are looking to an even better year this year! I would like to share information about two items before the start of school:

Student Schedules:
SPAN has closed for schedule change requests, and we are working through the remaining schedule issues that we have. The most up-to-date schedules are on SPAN.
On Wednesday, the first day of school, ALL students will report to their homerooms at 7:25 where they will receive a copy of their class schedule. In the last couple of days there has been a need- due to enrollment- to adjust some schedules to allow for balancing of teacher courseloads; in these cases, students may have had some classes switched within the same semester to level teaching loads for teachers. There has been a need in Math to create another section of Algebra I Part I , so some students may find that they were moved to this new class to ease overcrowding. Due to a scheduling error that was not caught in time for student schedules to go out, some students who had been scheduled into Sports Medicine I may find that they no longer have Sports Medicine I. We will only offer one section of Sports Medicine I in the spring of 2011. In cases where students had Sports Medicine I in the fall, we adjusted schedules by either pulling an elective from semester 2 and working with the student to choose another second semester elective OR by scheduling an alternate from the student's original registration information.

Curriculum Resources:
There are many curriculum resources that are available to students as we begin the 2010-2011 school year. Please visit our curriculum resource page for information about these programs. These programs include, Study Island, USA Test Prep, the WCPSS Success Series, SAS Curriculum Pathways, and SAT Prep on CFNC. Students who used Study Island last year, will be given new usernames and log-ins this year.

Mandatory Guided Study, Open Tutorial, and NHS Tutorial: 1. At Athens we schedule Mandatory Guided Study during the school day. This program allows teachers the opportunity to assign students who are struggling or who need additional help on specific concepts during the school day. Students who are assigned MGS will be expected to go. 2. Open Tutorial is an opportunity for students to seek additional help during the school day. During open tutorial, teachers are available for review or to answer specific questions that students have about their work. 3. This year, ADHS will also have National Honor Society tutorial available Mondays during A part of SMART Lunch and during A and B Part of SMART lunch on Wednesdays. Please visit our Curriculum web site for information about MGS, Tutorials and NHS Tutoring .

paw August 3, 2010 Schedules in SPAN - an FYI from your FAQs
Schedules have been posted to SPAN as of August 2, 2010. Of course, with the posting of schedules there is a great deal of enthusiasm around them, and some confusion, so I want to clarify and hopefully streamline a process. Please look over this information carefully:

  • Schedule change requests can be made only through student accounts.
  • SPAN Passwords: Please use the Password Recovery function in SPAN. This function works only if the email address that you have in SPAN matches the email address that you provide in Password Recovery, and Password recovery is an automated response system. If you cannot access through this means, please click Technical Support and type the information there. In the comments, you can indicate that you need a password reset. This method is the most efficient way for getting passwords. Please allow 24 hours for password resets.

  • Schedule change requests are being processed daily, so please allow time for these requests to be processed. It could take several days up to a couple of weeks for them to be processed.

  • It is VERY important that requests go through SPAN so that we have a record of the request. It does slow down the process when a request is put in, and the counselor or other school official is also contacted. Often, we find that we may double up on our efforts when the work could be spread out among personnel. It is also important that students, when they feel the need to contact a counselor, contact the counselor whom they are currently assigned, so that we may efficiently handle any schedule issues.

paw April 5, 2010 School Messenger Call - RE: Dress Code & Report Cards

On Monday, April 5, ADHS Administration sent an automated call to families regarding WCPSS Dress Code (Click Here) to read it. To maximize compliance and reduce disruption from inappropriate clothing, administration also broadcast video of the staff and administration's expectations. The transcript of the call follows. This is an automated message from the staff and administration of Athens Drive High School. School Messenger Transcript:

First, we trust that you have had an enjoyable and safe holiday and are eager to get your students back to school! This message will refer to the WCPSS dress code policy and the change from 3 rd to the 4 th grading quarter. As is typical with warmer weather, Athens Faculty and Administration have noticed an increase in clothing that is inappropriate for school. WCPSS Policy 6410.1, which may be found on the ADHS website under policies, gives discretion to principals and staff to determine what is acceptable within the policy. Most violations are those which are too revealing and constitute a disruption to the learning environment. Shorts, skirts, and blouses/shirts are the most commonly offending items of clothing. Although there is no given length for shorts and skirts, anything shorter than mid-thigh approaches the “too short” category and the student may be asked to change. Tube tops, spaghetti straps, and any type of muscle/tank top shirt made to be worn as an undergarment are also violations of the dress code. When in doubt choose a more conservative style of dress. In one final note regarding the recent trend in rosaries being worn as necklaces, WCPSS recognizes the sanctity of rosaries as religious symbols not as pop-culture icons to be worn as necklaces. Please help us to continue to be a caring and sensitive school and respect the rights of all students by keeping your attire within the WCPSS dress code policy. Our final note for this message is of an academic nature. The 3 rd quarter ended last week and the 4 th quarter begins on Tuesday, April 6. Be sure to focus on ending the year on a positive academic note by monitoring grades through SPAN and daily agendas. Report cards will be issued to students on Friday, April 9. For those of you who use SPAN, a sneak preview is available under the grades tab in SPAN. Press * to replay this automated message from Athens Drive High School.

Hello. This is Mr. Crockett on the Athens Drive High School Phone Messenger System with a New Year’s message for our parents and students.  We look forward to a return to school on Monday after a relaxing and re-energizing holiday.
First, I am pleased to announce that we begin the New Year with a new school website that has a new look and organization that we hope will provide a more coherent message.    Please visit www.athensdrive.com and take a look. Second, a reminder that on Wednesday, we have a 1:28 dismissal. My third announcement is that we will begin our exam schedule in little over a week on January 14 th .   Every student was given a letter to take to parents with the complete exam schedule.   This information can also be found on the school website under the “News” heading. Next, in case you had not heard, I want to make you aware of the U.s. News and World Reports’ ranking of ADHS as one of America’s best high schools.   We can all be proud of this distinction.   The official banner should soon be on display at school and on the website. Finally, a reminder for students to keep cell phones, I-pods, CD players, and other electronic devices cut off and out of sight all day until 2:28.  Thank you and Good Bye.
