2013 School Messenger Call RE: This Week Activities
Good evening. This is the Athens Drive High School Phone Messenger System with announcements for parents about school activities for the week. I begin with a cancellation. The PTSA workshop on health and nutrition scheduled for Monday evening is cancelled. Next, The BOE representative for the Athens district has scheduled a town hall meeting on Monday evening. Dr. Jim Martin felt it important before spring break to provide more information about matters before the Board: facilities, budgets, and a new superintendent. So, to obtain this information and to get any of your questions answered, come to the ADHS auditorium on Monday, March 25th, 6:00 pm. Let’s turn our thoughts to final exams. Last week we gave students information on final exams. Be sure to review this information. There is a new wrinkle added to the exam schedule as some courses have added an exam called Measures of Student Learning that will replace teacher made exams. Also, we will have exam information on the school website. We end this week on Wednesday which is the last day of third quarter. Thursday and Friday are vacation days for students as we begin spring break. This concludes this announcement from ADHS. Have a great spring break. Thank you and goodbye.

by now, please call 233-4023 and leave a message with
your student’s name and your telephone number. If you

academies do, where they will lead your students and
how join. See you there! Third, the continued cutbacks
have affected our Athens Drive summer services. We maintain
summer business hours in the Front Office and Student
Services but reduced staffing means greater wait times.
If you must make a trip to Athens Drive during the summer
an advanced call to the Front Office at 233-4050 or Student
Services at 233-4060 is advisable. Fourth, if you have
chosen to attend high school elsewhere and are receiving
this message, please contact our office to have them
remove your name from our roll.
Finally, I am personally inviting you to the upcoming
Freshman Orientation Camp. Camps are offered on Wednesday,
August 1, or Wednesday, August 8. Athens Drive is a big
place with a personal touch. The best way for you to

is to come to the Freshman Orientation Camp. We’ve planned
for a full morning of fun while also sharing valuable
information about Athens Drive. If you have already registered
then feel free to hang up now. If you haven’t registered
then listen up.
Our online registration will only remain active until

30, 2012 School Messenger Call.
Athens parents
and students, this is Dr. Miller calling with an
automated message from the school messenger system.
We have several brief announcements today. First,
thank you for your support and teamwork in finishing
the first semester on a strong note. Report cards
were issued to the students on Friday, January 27.
If you have questions about the report card, your
first point of contact would be your student’s teacher
via e-mail or their counselor with more general questions.
We have gotten off to a great start with the second
semester. Thanks for your help in the smooth transition.
Our 2nd Semester Open House will be held on Thursday,
February 9, 2012, 6:15 – 8pm. Please note that this
is a change from February 7th. Per our notification
in December, Athens was chosen as a pilot school
for the Blackboard upgrade. The initial upgrade in
December was postponed due to technological challenges.
The Blackboard Conversion to 9.1 will begin on Wednesday,
February 1st at 8:00 a.m. There is a flyer under
breaking news on AthensDrive.com with specific information about the upgrade. Other than
an outage, things should be seamless for our end-users.
As a reaffirmation of our Positive Behavior and Intervention
Support Program administration reminded students
of Dress Code Expectations and the consequences of
being Off-limits/Off campus without authorization.
Only juniors and seniors with an approved off campus
lunch pass have this opportunity. All other students
must remain in the building under supervision of
Athens Drive personnel. Please see the AthensDrive.com
policy page and the Athens Student Code of Conduct
if you have questions regarding the policy or consequences.
Our final announcement pertains to our upcoming Registration
Curriculum Fair. It is very beneficial in planning
courses for next year and for the future. Take advantage
of the sessions – especially given the fact that
the Common Core Curriculum will begin affecting Athens
students next year. Our curriculum session is Tuesday,
February 28, 2012, 6:30 – 8:30pm. This Annual Curriculum Night is for 9, 10, and 11 grade students and parents
to learn about graduation requirements, course offerings
and Advanced Placement (AP)opportunities at Athens,
as well as changes in the curricular focus for 2012-2013.

The regular exam period ends at 10:45 and we dismiss school at this time. Unless students have a re-test or a make up test scheduled in the afternoon, their school day will end at 10:45 each day from Thursday through Friday, January 20th. Another exam announcement is that we are in need of parents to serve as testing proctors for EOC tests. To volunteer to help, call Student Services at 233-4060 or look for the link on the school webpage at SignUpGenius.com. We have a PTSA Board meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Our PTSA Board invites all ADHS parents to attend this business session. For our final announcement: if you know an eighth grader who is scheduled to attend Athens next year or if you are aware of any family considering Athens in the new choice model, encourage them to attend our Open House on Monday evening. This is an open house for new students and parents on Monday at 6:00 p.m. Thank you for your time on a Sunday evening. You can replay this message by pressing star. Good Bye from Athens Drive High School.
December 11, 2011 School Messenger Call.
Good afternoon. This is Dr. Miller with an automated School Messenger Call on behalf of Mr. Crockett. We’ve got five quick items of interest for you. Additional information for each of these items may be found under Breaking News on AthensDrive.com. The first item is PLAN Testing: The PLAN will be administered to all 10th graders on Monday, December 12. For your information, the PLAN is a curriculum based achievement test in English, Math, Reading, and Science, that measures college and career readiness, serves as a midpoint assessment, and is also a predictor for the ACT. Second, interims are being sent home with your students. You will want to check SPAN for additional details of individual assignments and grades that are not present on the interims. Third, because of our involvement and high usage of BlackBoard, WCPSS chose Athens as a site for its upgrade to BlackBoard 9.1. We’ve been working behind the scenes to prepare for the upgrade and it is finally here. Public access to Athens Drive BlackBoard accounts will be temporarily interrupted for students from Wednesday, December 14 until the weekend. We have posted a flyer on Breaking News at AthensDrive.com with additional information for you. We are eagerly awaiting the more user-friendly interface and navigation of BlackBoard 9.1. Please contact Dr. Miller for specific answers to questions not found on the flyer. Next, Athens Drive will be holding its Enrollment Open House on January 9. Formerly called the Rising Freshman Open House, we are scheduling it much earlier this year for families who are interested in exercising school choice options. We have also opened attendance to families of students who are currently enrolled in grades other than the 8th grade in the event that families are considering their option of school choice enrollment changes. Finally, the semester’s finals’ testing begins on January 12. We have posted the testing calendar online and we highly recommend that you download the PDF document. There are a number of unique issues with this year’s testing calendar due to existing calendar dates. Thank you for listening to the full message from Athens Drive High.

August 1, 2010 School Messenger Call Re: Schedules in SPAN, PTSA, Jag Club, Freshman Camp
The following text comes verbatim from the message sent by Dr. Miller on Mr. Crockett's behalf. Welcome Athens parents. School is just around the corner and we've got several important announcements. Please accept this brief School Messenger call on behalf of Mr. Crockett and the staff of Athens Drive High School – recently announced as one of the Newsweek America's Best High Schools. This is yet another affirmation of the excellence of Athens Drive High. This message contains three items. First, this weekend is the North Carolina tax free weekend. It is an excellent opportunity to purchase school clothing, technology, and supplies. There is a list of suggested supplies on the Freshman Academy page of Athens Drive.com. The annual Jaguar Club dinner fund-raiser will be held on August 11. This is a large fund-raiser for athletics so plan on eating dinner as one large family on August 11. An informational flyer will soon appear on the website. This second item pertains to all parents of students in grades 10 through 12. On Monday, August 2 nd , student schedules will be viewable via SPAN. Username and logins remain the same from last year. Please note that any schedule change requests MUST come through the online SPAN module. The only requests that will be honored relate to imbalanced schedules and/or a lack of a course needed for graduation. Please be patient after requesting a change. Counselors will begin working on the necessary changes upon their return on August 17. The final item relates to freshmen. Our 2010 Freshmen Orientation Camps are August 4 and August 11. Although online registration has been closed to permit processing, we are gladly accepting ON-SITE registrations on the 4 th and 11 th . Simply go to the registration table labeled as on-site. Your student will receive their schedule, T-Shirt, and a registration packet as well. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. with the sessions beginning at 8:30. Parents will meet in the auditorium until 9:30 for a general session. They will reconvene in the cafeteria where representatives of the PTSA, Jaguar Club, administration, student services, and transportation will assist with specific questions. You may spend as little or as much time as you feel is necessary to have your individual family needs met. The PTSA and Jaguar Club will be conducting their membership drives and spirit wear will also be available for sale.
As a confirmation of last year's prestigious announcement by U.S. News & World Report, Athens Dr
April 5, 2010 School Messenger Call - RE: Dress Code & Report Cards
On Monday, April 5, ADHS Administration sent an automated call to families regarding WCPSS Dress Code (Click Here) to read it. To maximize compliance and reduce disruption from inappropriate clothing, administration also broadcast video of the staff and administration's expectations. The transcript of the call follows. This is an automated message from the staff and administration of Athens Drive High School. School Messenger Transcript:
First, we trust that you have had an enjoyable and safe holiday and are eager to get your students back to school! This message will refer to the WCPSS dress code policy and the change from 3 rd to the 4 th grading quarter. As is typical with warmer weather, Athens Faculty and Administration have noticed an increase in clothing that is inappropriate for school. WCPSS Policy 6410.1, which may be found on the ADHS website under policies, gives discretion to principals and staff to determine what is acceptable within the policy. Most violations are those which are too revealing and constitute a disruption to the learning environment. Shorts, skirts, and blouses/shirts are the most commonly offending items of clothing. Although there is no given length for shorts and skirts, anything shorter than mid-thigh approaches the “too short” category and the student may be asked to change. Tube tops, spaghetti straps, and any type of muscle/tank top shirt made to be worn as an undergarment are also violations of the dress code. When in doubt choose a more conservative style of dress. In one final note regarding the recent trend in rosaries being worn as necklaces, WCPSS recognizes the sanctity of rosaries as religious symbols not as pop-culture icons to be worn as necklaces. Please help us to continue to be a caring and sensitive school and respect the rights of all students by keeping your attire within the WCPSS dress code policy. Our final note for this message is of an academic nature. The 3 rd quarter ended last week and the 4 th quarter begins on Tuesday, April 6. Be sure to focus on ending the year on a positive academic note by monitoring grades through SPAN and daily agendas. Report cards will be issued to students on Friday, April 9. For those of you who use SPAN, a sneak preview is available under the grades tab in SPAN. Press * to replay this automated message from Athens Drive High School.

Greetings Team,
Because of the weather conditions, WCPSS has closed school for students on Monday. All school activities are canceled. Athens will also be closed for faculty. As per the WCPSS calendar, Monday should be a teacher workday; however, conditions at school are too icy and dangerous for staff to report. As soon as possible, I will announce an alternate plan for those who want to make-up this workday. FYI: Monday, February 15, the designated snow make-up day, will now be a regular school day. Stay warm and safe.

Second, a reminder that on Wednesday, we have a 1:28 dismissal.
My third announcement is that we will begin our exam schedule in little over a week on January 14 th . Every student was given a letter to take to parents with the complete exam schedule. This information can also be found on the school website under the “News” heading. Next, in case you had not heard, I want to make you aware of the U.s. News and World Reports’ ranking of ADHS as one of America’s best high schools. We can all be proud of this distinction. The official banner should soon be on display at school and on the website. November 30, 2009 School Messenger Message RE: 11:58 Early Release
This is Mr. Crockett from Athens Drive High School calling on our School Messenger System with an announcement to make sure that our community understands the time for our early release day this Wednesday. On Wednesday, December 2nd, we will end the school day at 11:58 which is earlier than most of our other Wednesday dismissal days. For Wednesday’s early release day, we will not serve lunch. Buses will run at 11:58. To summarize, because we have different times for Wednesday dismissal, I want our parents to know that on this Wednesday we dismiss at 11:58. Thank you and Good Bye.
November 22, 2009 School Messenger Message: RE: Electronic Device Policy Enforcement!
On Monday, we are going to remind students of the rule pertaining to cell phones and other electronic devices; we will also explain the consequences for students who violate the rule. We also want our parents to understand.
Here is the rule in simple terms: Students should not have their phones out where they can be seen, and the student phone should always be cut off.
In our message to students, we will emphasize that from the time that the student enters the building to start the day until the final bell at 2:28, the phone should not be visible and should not be on.
It is important that students understand that when a faculty member sees or hears the phone or electronic device, the faculty member will confiscate the phone.
The rule has not changed; we are looking to have more consistent enforcement. We realize that cell phones are an important part of our culture and a valuable communication tool; however, more and more, students' use of cell phones is a distraction in class. Please share with the student the Wake County Public School System rule that cell phones should not be visible or on during the school day.
In the sake of time, the following was not included in the phone message but will be explained to students:
The first time a student's phone is taken it will be returned to the student at the end of the school day. If the item is confiscated in the afternoon, it will be returned at the end of the next school day. On the second occurrence, the item will be returned only to the parent.
When a student does not surrender the cell phone or electronic device, we have a second discipline issue. Violation of our compliance policy will be handled according to our Code of Conduct. Addendum: See WCPSS Electronic Device Policy Here (in a new window)
November 15, 2009 School Messenger Message RE: PTSA Membership and College Application Week
I have two announcements: one for seniors and their parents and a second announcement for all parents from our PTSA. For seniors, this is college application week. At all community colleges and some private colleges, applications will be free. Since the College Foundation of North Carolina and the Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers are co-sponsoring College Application Week, there will be an opportunity for seniors to complete the application at school during the day on Wednesday and Thursday. Seniors interested should sign-up in the Student Services office on Monday or Tuesday. Seniors will need a user account in CFNC.org. For all parents: Our PTSA wants to announce that it is not too late to become a member of the ADHS PTSA or to make a donation. Because there is not a product fundraiser, PTSA programs depend totally on your donations. Go to the Athens Drive website for the membership and donation form or contact our PTSA president at sandraclark@nc.rr.com. Thank you and Good Bye.
